Social Enterprise

Social enterprises are social purpose driven organisations which apply business modelling and market-based strategies to achieve a social goal. Currently both internationally and within Australia the Social Enterprise movement is gaining momentum. There are 62,000 social enterprises in the UK contributing £24billion to the UK economy (State of Social Enterprise Survey 2009 commissioned by the Social Enterprise Coalition). The `Finding Australia’s Social Enterprise Sector:

Final Report’, a joint initiative between Social Traders and the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies identifies up to 20,000 Australian social enterprises.

CentralCoast Regional Social Enterprise Strategy

The purpose of this strategy is to provide a framework for social innovation on the Central Coast that contributes to the development of a strong culture of social enterprise. It aims to identify and support three distinct groups;

• Social entrepreneurs who want to realise a social agenda
• Emerging and existing social enterprises, and
• Community service organisations wanting to utilise social enterprise as a vehicle for social change and diversifying income generation.
The intention is to build relationships and strong partnerships, with Business and Industry, avoiding direct competition with existing businesses.
